The inn

The inn and its grounds

A small inn on its own stretch of forest near Robbinsville, North Carolina. Eight suites, a creek you can hear from most of the property, trails, a pavilion, a firepit, and a private dock on Lake Santeetlah a walk down through the woods.

The property

Twelve acres of woodland in Graham County, inside the Nantahala National Forest, with no through traffic and no neighbours in sight.

Everything is on one property and reachable on foot. The creek runs past the building, the pond is a few minutes away, and the trails start where the mown grass stops. Breakfast is made here every morning and included. The dock on Lake Santeetlah is ours, downhill through the trees rather than out on the road.

Eight rooms is the whole inn, so the car park is never full and the great room is never crowded.

The forest

The inn sits in its own stretch of woodland with no through traffic and no neighbours in sight. It is the reason the place sounds the way it does.

The creek

It runs past the inn and you can hear it from a good deal of the property. Guests tend to mention it more than anything else, usually in the context of sleeping with a window open.

Private decks

Each suite has its own side deck, reached from inside the room or from outside it. That second door is unusual and it is the thing guests notice on the first evening.

Still water, best in the first hour of light. A short walk with a coffee and nothing else to do.

The firepit

Where the evening ends. It is also the darkest sky most guests will have stood under in a long time.
